Prospect Three Stars of the Week 10/1-10/8

Prospect Three Stars of the Week 10/1-10/8

With hockey in full swing now, it's easy to get lost in which of the San Jose Sharks prospects are doing what where. No worries, got you covered! The plan is to highlight the Sharks' three prospects of the week every week and what they did over the past week.

Quickly on Quentin Musty, who requested a trade from Sudbury this week after not reporting after he was released from Sharks training camp.

First, this does not affect his standing with the Sharks. His contract doesn't change. He is still a Sharks prospect.

Second, Musty most likely wants to play for a contender this season. Not reporting is the only leverage he has to be traded. He will get traded at some point, but it's just a standoff with management right now on getting a fair deal done for all sides.

Third Star of the Week
Reese Laubach, Sophmore Penn State
2 games, 2 goals, 1 assist, 7 SOG

Yes, it was against an inferior opponent in Alaska Fairbanks, but that is what you want to see. Laubach scored all of his points in the Nittany Lions' second game, where he had some highlight plays, including a pass that was Erik Karlsson-esq.

Laubach has already taken over the team's role as first-line center and could be in line for a massive season with Penn State as he defies expectations as a seventh-round pick.

Second Star of the Week
Filip Bystedt, San Jose Barracuda
2 games, 1 goal, 3 assists, 3 SOG

Filip Bystedt feels like the Sharks' forgotten prospect since we haven't gotten as many viewings of him with the hype around Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith. Still, after a cup of coffee with the Barracuda last season, he is picking up right where he left off.

Bystedt finished last year with four goals and three assists in eight games in the AHL while transitioning from the SHL to the AHL. This season, he looks integral to the San Jose Barracuda's desire to make the postseason.

Bystedt will likely play behind veteran Andrew Poturalski on the Cuda's second line. This will help to take the pressure off of Bystedt to play against other team's top players and allow him to continue to develop into his role as the future Sharks third-line center.

Bystedt is already playing in all situations for the Barracuda and could be a sneaky pick to represent the Barracuda at the AHL All-Star game in Coachella Valley.

First Star of the Week
Danil Gushchin, San Jose Sharks
2 games, 0 goals, 5 assists, 5 SOG

You typically won't see San Jose Sharks roster players on this list, but had to give a shoutout to our favorite Russian sniper as he makes the Sharks opening night roster.

Gushchin's play was a substantial reason for the Sharks' 6-5 comeback win against the Vegas Golden Knights. He recorded five assists, four of them primary.

He forced Mike Grier to put him on the team after a strong preseason that saw Gushchin among the NHL's leaders in points. It remains to be seen if Gushchin will spend the entire season with the Sharks, but he has earned his right to be on the opening night roster after his preseason performance.
