The Case for Bill Zonnon

The Case for Bill Zonnon

With the second pick, the San Jose Sharks will likely take either Michael Misa or Matthew Schaefer. With the pick they received from the Dallas Stars in the Mikael Granlund trade, they should have plenty of options to add a talented player to the draft pool.

With Bill Zonnon, the Sharks would add a physical, playoff-caliber forward that General Manager Mike Grier covets. Zonnon is a forechecking machine that would easily complement the Sharks' playmakers already added to their system.

The Montreal native has the style of play that every team looks for at playoff time. Hard, fast, in-your-face hockey that does not relent. He can score from crashing the net and from a distance. While he scored 28 goals in 64 games, his playmaking and puck retrieval skills are where he shines.

Zonnon's relentless forechecking eliminates opposing defenders' time and space, creating havoc for the other team. He brings a hard hat and lunch pail to every shift and would be an outstanding complementary player for Will Smith, Macklin Celebrini, or Misa. Zonnon's play style and work ethic are a coach’s dream.

While Zonnon does have many of the hard skills in checking and his play along the boards, he also has the soft skills that make him worthy of being a first-round pick. He has a great hockey sense and a shot that is getting better as he continues to fill out his frame. While issues with his skating occur, Zonnon should be able to fix those as he continues to strengthen.

If the Sharks pass on Porter Martone, Bill Zonnon at the end of the first might be a worthy flyer as the Sharks continue looking for players to complement their high-end skill forwards. Zonnon feels like a very GMMG pick, and if he is available, don't be surprised to see him don teal on June 27th.
